HOW TO MIX METALS: RINGS EDITION

A great way to play with your jewelry is to mix it up and wear all different colors of metals all at once.  The days of wearing matchy matchy jewelry are thankfully over!  Jewelry should coordinate but not necessarily match.  Once you see them worn all together they instantly "go" together.  Go ahead and take that gold ring and pile it on with your 2 silver ones.  If you are a little nervous on where to start here are a few tips to think of when choosing what works with what.

Your choices should look deliberate.  So an idea is to take 1 silver and 1 gold ring and wear them on the same finger.  I usually follow the rule that things look better in odd numbers so if you are going to wear 2 rings on one finger throw a third ring on another finger on the same hand to really make a deliberate statement.  If mixing stone color and metal color is a bit too daring for you, stick with one stone, say diamonds, but mix it up with the different color bands like Rihanna did pictured here. Remember that variety is the spice of life, so go express that through your rings, and have fun doing it!

WHAT A PIN HEAD

I love this idea of using vintage broaches as boutonnieres, and check out the ones in the bridesmaids hair.  Such a lovely touch.

JEWELRY IT GIRL: NORA KOGAN

I am of the philosophy that more is more when it comes to jewelry.  I believe that metal should be mixed and stones of every color and size can and should be piled on all together.  The difference between a dressed person and a someone with style is how they accessorize.  My former boss Nora Kogan, the designer behind St. Kilda Jewelry, is an expert at this more is more way of accessorizing.    I was luck enough to be around her on a daily basis and soak up the design inspiration she provided me.  Here are some of the combination she would wear on any particular day.  You can check out her jewels at Stkildajewelry.com and she also has a great blog at stkildajewelry.wordpress.com

EFFORTLESSLY GLAMOUROUS

As you may or may not know I am a jewelry designer, and jewelry for me is a passion.  I believe it is the MOST important part of any outfit.  The jewelry choices you make is the difference between a dressed person and a fashionista.  We all wear clothes and as easy as it is to throw on a great dress or jeans and a top, it's the details that make the outfit stand out.  Many people get intimidated by accessorizing so I thought I would break it down and give some helpful tips on how to  use jewelry to enhance your ultimate unique beauty.

Remember that jewelry should empower you and give you a tool to express yourself.  So go on and experiment and have fun with it.  Don't get overwhelmed just check back here for tips on how to wear jewelry to best suite your beauty.

So as a little teaser I have  compiled a few photos of one of my jewelry icons Frida Kahlo.  If you don't know who Kahlo is you need to stop what you're doing and look her up right now.  She is not only one of my favorite painters she get's an A+ for accessorizing.

INSPIRED

This morning I woke up inspired.  Inspired to create.  Something I haven't felt in far too long.  These past three years I was more like a machine, than a designer.  Making things to please the masses instead of myself.  I was designing to survive in New York, turning my passion into simply a money maker.  I thought I would move to New York and be overcome with inspiration, but the opposite happened.  I didn't paint once the whole three years I lived in New York.  I was a hamster on a wheel, determined not let the city beat me.  I thought if I make something, anything, for anybody I can get by another day and show New York I can survive the cut throat streets.  I was fighting to make it happen the whole time I was there.  Now don't get me wrong I loved my time in New York City!  I met brilliant people, and experienced things I would otherwise never experience, and I would not change a minute of it for anything, but for the first time since I've left the city I am happy to be home.

California is my home, and I am here.  I don't feel stifled here, quite the opposite I feel free.  Free to create whatever my little heart desires!  I don't know what the future holds for me but what I have come to realized just this morning is that I am where I belong, and I'm happy to be here.

Today is the day I start to create my life in California, for no other reason other than I want to.  I'm suppose to, the universe told me.  I'm making jewelry with my own two hands today, really making jewelry, like really really making it with my whole heart.  Something I haven't done in 3 years.  I can't wait to see what's next!

This is exactly how I love to decorate.  From the miss matched patterns and furniture, to the exposed brick and open shelving, to the bright and airy white walls.  It's perfection to me!
